William Harley and Arthur Davidson were the founders of these world famous bikes. The first one was manufactured in urban Wisconsin in a tiny 10 foot by 15 foot wooden shed in urban Wisconsin. At that time they had no idea that they will grow so big so fast. In 1904 the two founders struck their first Harley-Davidson Dealership and they were introduced by C.H. Lang in Chicago, Illinois. Henry Meyer was the first customer ever and he bought it from its wooden workshop at Milwaukee.
In the next year it was a Harley Davidson bike that won a race for the first time ever. And in less than ten years these bikes were competing in all sorts of races all round the US. The races were as different from each other as they could be. Motorcycles were built to suitably adapt to the hill climbing races, lap races, and endurance competitions. In all such races these bikes always held the top slot. It was only in 1913, ten years after the company was founded that an official racing department was created.
In the year 1917, around one third of these hardy two-wheelers were catered to the elite Unites States Military, and within a year this number increased to fifty percent. In the World War 1 the majority of the motorcycles used in the battle efforts were Harley Davidson. In 1983 the HOG (Harley Owners Group) was formed and it did not lose time in becoming the largest factory sponsored motorcycle clubs in the history of automobiles, boasting of 500,000 active members by the year 2000.
